jehovah's witnesses acquire peculiar ideas.. those peculiar ideas give rise to warped views.. the more warped a jw's outlook becomes the more the association with others whose thinking has twisted will conform and radicalize them.. .
consider this simple statement of scripture, first.. 1 timothy 5:8revised standard version (rsv).
8 if any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.. .
Good post Terry.
Family is NOT important to the average JW. Therefore, there is no need to worry about taking care of someone. I remember talking to a brother who had been accepted into circuit work. I reminded him that his parents were older and that he might need to return home to help take care of them so he probably shouldn't divest himself of everything he owned. He shrugged it off and quoted that scripture from Psalms, "I have not seen a righteous man forsaken or his children searching for bread." No, for him, Jehovah and the congregation would take care of them...After all, THEY RAISED HIM TO REACH OUT FOR SPIRITUAL GOALS!
Most JW families are a sham. They are a collective group of dysfunctionals that PRETEND to be happy so that they garnish praise and privileges. They have been displaced from the real world and all that matters is how the collective views them. If one of them falls out of line, typically, it will be another family member that will throw them under the bus while someone else in the family is driving it.
It reminds me again, sorry I'm rambling, about the Danish movie where the young girl is DF'd and she goes to a funeral and sees her family. Her dad says something about her being selfish and she asks him why he is a JW, "So I can live forever in paradise," he says. Well, who is the selfish one then?

the story of why the new bible has a grey cover (silver sword) moved me to ask you all what your favorite jw urban legend is?.

One of my favorite JW urban legends
A sister is out in service alone. She approaches the door of this guy. Little does she know that he is a murderer and the voices in his head told him to kill the next person that came to his door. When the sister arrives, he answers the door with a conflicted look on his face. She speaks to him and leaves as he is not interested. Later, another person shows up at the door. He kills that man.
A next door neighbor sees what happened so calls the police. The man is arrested. While they are interviewing him, they ask why he didn't simply kill the JW woman that was there before. He says, "She wasn't alone." They are confounded as they interviewed her and she mentioned that she was alone. They mention this to the murderer. He states, "She wasn't alone. There was a big guy with white hair standing behind her. So, I didn't do anything. He looked like he was her bodyguard or something." The police tell the JW woman it must have been her angel.
Urban Legend?
What is your favorite?

every year, the mormon church has a program that is televised via satellite to mormon sanctuaries all over the world.
the prophet and the quorum of the twelve are part of that program and the faithful mormon is overjoyed to have the chance to hear them speak, especially the prophet as he speaks for god (with a little direction from the his two sidekicks, select members of the quorum of the twelve that serve as his attendants or counselors).
i have always been amazed at this aspect of the mormon church.
I realize now how important the TITLE of a new post can be....NO THIS IS NOT ABOUT FOOTBALL!!!
while in discussion with an elder from my old congregation, he asked if i had been given an opportunity to see the new bibles yet.. i told him yes that a family member had showed me one a few days back and some of the improvements (changes) that were in it.. as our conversation went along he asked me what i thought of the color.
i said well its certainly different from the black cover i was so used to or even going back further a few decades the green covered bibles when i was a child.
(we both got a chuckle out of that).
I just love those JW urban legends!!!

I have always been amazed at this aspect of the Mormon church. Their leaders feel the need to reach out to the most remote locations of the world so that even the most humble or their flock has the chance and privilege to hear from those with a direct line to the Almighty.
Well, taking a call from the Mormon playbook. The new GB has decided that next year, with the new series of International Conventions, select discourses by the Governing Body and some of their assistants (Prophet and the attendants) will be televised at all assemblies in the U.S..
With the advent of "family worship" and now this system of "select discourses," I wonder what other plays from the mormon playbook will be implemented.

from jw.org (while waiting for new bible to download, i clicked on the link for "christian," which asks the following question...).
"are we christians?
we are christians, for the following reasons.
Where there is a hierarchy, there are titles!
The Watchtower Organization is just that...an Organization with a hierarchy just as vast as the Catholic Church.
As far as the difference between "labels" and "titles"? Well, a jar of peanut butter has a "label" the "title" on that label is "Skippy" or "JIF" or "Laura Scudders." It is the title that distinguishes the jar. Just as GB, DO, CO, Bethelite, Elder, MS, Pioneer distinguish the person. And for a JW, being "disintinguished" among people is of the utmost importance.
Just a thought, or a few,

as a young teenager, i would look at "apostate" books at the city library.
i was always intrigued as to what was sooo bad and other than a few writings of some that seemed like they hated the witnesses, i would clandestinely look at literature, especially in "christian" bookstores.. it took years for me to finally disconnect.
i will say that ray franz' books enlightened me the most!.
It would be interesting to see what type of information is available in the old Gilead library or the library of the Writing Committee. I would imagine that anything that I have read might pale in comparison to some of what may exist there.

so, if you haven't become an atheist yet and still hold on to some form of christian based/bible based faith.
tell us one scripture that defines where you are at right now in your spiritual journey.... .
Sorry, I realized I didn't include my selection:
John 5:39, the words of Jesus to the Jewish rulers,
"You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me."
This is a wonderful scripture for the pharisaical among believers. As I have said before, if you ask any JW, "Where is Charles Taze Russel right now?" They will say, "Heaven."
"How could he be in heaven if he didn't believe 99% of what you believe because of all the new light?"
"Because God judged his heart condition."
SO there it is!
